    Entanglement properties of a measurement-based entanglement distillation experiment

    Measures of entanglement can be employed for the analysis of numerous quantum information protocols. Due to computational convenience, logarithmic negativity is often the choice in the case of continuous variable systems. In this work, we analyse a continuous variable measurement-based entanglement distillation experiment using a collection of entanglement measures. This includes: logarithmic negativity, entanglement of formation, distillable entanglement, relative entropy of entanglement, and squashed entanglement. By considering the distilled entanglement as a function of the success probability of the distillation protocol, we show that the logarithmic negativity surpasses the bound on deterministic entanglement distribution at a relatively large probability of success. This is in contrast to the other measures which would only be able to do so at much lower probabilities, hence demonstrating that logarithmic negativity alone is inadequate for assessing the performance of the distillation protocol. In addition to this result, we also observed an increase in the distillable entanglement by making use of upper and lower bounds to estimate this quantity.     Response Identification in the Extremely Low Frequency Region of an Electret Condenser Microphone

    This study shows that a small electret condenser microphone connected to a notebook or a personal computer (PC) has a prominent response in the extremely low frequency region in a specific environment. It confines most acoustic waves within a tiny air cell as follows. The air cell is constructed by drilling a small hole in a digital versatile disk (DVD) plate. A small speaker and an electret condenser microphone are attached to the two sides of the hole. Thus, the acoustic energy emitted by the speaker and reaching the microphone is strong enough to actuate the diaphragm of the latter. The experiments showed that, once small air leakages are allowed on the margin of the speaker, the microphone captured the signal in the range of 0.5 to 20 Hz. Moreover, by removing the plastic cover of the microphone and attaching the microphone head to the vibration surface, the low frequency signal can be effectively captured too. Two examples are included to show the convenience of applying the microphone to pick up the low frequency vibration information of practical systems

    Electrical characteristics of metal-insulator-semiconductor Schottky diodes using a photowashing treatment in AlzGa1-xAs/InGaAs (X=0.75) pseudimorphic high electron mobility transistors

    MIS Schottky diodes on Al0.75Ga0.25As/In0.2Ga0.8As PHEMTs were produced using both photowashing and H2O2 treatments. The Schottky contact on the GaAs layer with photowashing and H2O2 treatments showed enhancements of the SBH of about 0.11 and 0.05 eV, respectively. However, on the undoped AlGaAs layer, no further improvement in SBH was observed. After the photowashing treatment, the Ga oxide (Ga2O3) was dominantly created. In the mean time, two types of As oxide (As2O3,As5O2) were mainly produced by the H2O2 treatment, which are distributed uniformly on the GaAs surface. The thickness of the oxide layer formed by both treatments was nearly the same. Applying a representative model, formation of Ga oxide after the photowashing treatment effectively enhanced the SBH.open4

    The association between contrast-enhanced ultrasound and near-infrared spectroscopy-derived measures of calf muscle microvascular responsiveness in older adults

    Background and Aim Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) measures of post-occlusion skeletal muscle microvascular responsiveness demonstrate the microvascular dysfunction associated with ageing and age-related disease. However, the accessibility of CEUS is limited by the need for intravenous administration of ultrasound contrast agents and sophisticated imaging analysis. Alternative methods are required for the broader assessment of microvascular dysfunction in research and clinical settings. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the level of association and agreement between CEUS and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-derived measures of post-occlusion skeletal muscle microvascular responsiveness in older adults. Methods During supine rest, participants (n=15, 67±11 years) underwent 5 minutes of thigh cuff-occlusion (200 mmHg). Post-occlusion CEUS measures of calf muscle microvascular responsiveness were made, including time to 95% peak acoustic intensity (TTP95 AI) and the rate of rise (slope AI). Simultaneous measures, including time to 95% peak oxygenated haemoglobin (TTP95 O2Hb) and slope O2Hb, were made using continuous-wave NIRS in the same muscle region. Results There were strong correlations between TTP95 measures derived from CEUS and NIRS (r=0.834, p=<0.001) and the corresponding measures of slope (r=0.735, p=0.004). The limits of agreement demonstrated by Bland Altman plot analyses for CEUS and NIRS-derived measures of TTP95 (-9.67–1.98 s) and slope (-1.29–5.23%. s-1) were smaller than the minimum differences expected in people with microvascular dysfunction. Conclusions The strong correlations and level of agreement in the present study support the use of NIRS as a non-invasive, portable and cost-effective method for assessing post-occlusion skeletal muscle microvascular responsiveness in older adults

    Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.     Measurement of the cross-section of high transverse momentum vector bosons reconstructed as single jets and studies of jet substructure in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents a measurement of the cross-section for high transverse momentum W and Z bosons produced in pp collisions and decaying to all-hadronic final states. The data used in the analysis were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV;{\rm Te}{\rm V}andcorrespondtoanintegratedluminosityof and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6\;{\rm f}{{{\rm b}}^{-1}}.ThemeasurementisperformedbyreconstructingtheboostedWorZbosonsinsinglejets.ThereconstructedjetmassisusedtoidentifytheWandZbosons,andajetsubstructuremethodbasedonenergyclusterinformationinthejetcentreofmassframeisusedtosuppressthelargemultijetbackground.ThecrosssectionforeventswithahadronicallydecayingWorZboson,withtransversemomentum. The measurement is performed by reconstructing the boosted W or Z bosons in single jets. The reconstructed jet mass is used to identify the W and Z bosons, and a jet substructure method based on energy cluster information in the jet centre-of-mass frame is used to suppress the large multi-jet background. The cross-section for events with a hadronically decaying W or Z boson, with transverse momentum {{p}_{{\rm T}}}\gt 320\;{\rm Ge}{\rm V}andpseudorapidity and pseudorapidity |\eta |\lt 1.9,ismeasuredtobe, is measured to be {{\sigma }_{W+Z}}=8.5\pm 1.7$ pb and is compared to next-to-leading-order calculations. The selected events are further used to study jet grooming techniques

    Search for the neutral Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search for neutral Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is reported. The analysis is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data were recorded in 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb-1 to 4.8 fb-1. Higgs boson decays into oppositely-charged muon or τ lepton pairs are considered for final states requiring either the presence or absence of b-jets. No statistically significant excess over the expected background is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are derived. The exclusion limits are for the production cross-section of a generic neutral Higgs boson, φ, as a function of the Higgs boson mass and for h/A/H production in the MSSM as a function of the parameters mA and tan β in the mhmax scenario for mA in the range of 90GeV to 500 GeV.     Search for direct pair production of the top squark in all-hadronic final states in proton-proton collisions at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for direct pair production of the scalar partner to the top quark using an integrated luminosity of 20.1fb−1 of proton–proton collision data at √s = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are reported. The top squark is assumed to decay via t˜→tχ˜01 or t˜→ bχ˜±1 →bW(∗)χ˜01 , where χ˜01 (χ˜±1 ) denotes the lightest neutralino (chargino) in supersymmetric models. The search targets a fully-hadronic final state in events with four or more jets and large missing transverse momentum. No significant excess over the Standard Model background prediction is observed, and exclusion limits are reported in terms of the top squark and neutralino masses and as a function of the branching fraction of t˜ → tχ˜01 . For a branching fraction of 100%, top squark masses in the range 270–645 GeV are excluded for χ˜01 masses below 30 GeV. For a branching fraction of 50% to either t˜ → tχ˜01 or t˜ → bχ˜±1 , and assuming the χ˜±1 mass to be twice the χ˜01 mass, top squark masses in the range 250–550 GeV are excluded for χ˜01 masses below 60 GeV

    Search for pair-produced long-lived neutral particles decaying to jets in the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter in ppcollisions at √s=8TeV

    The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is used to search for the decay of a scalar boson to a pair of long-lived particles, neutral under the Standard Model gauge group, in 20.3fb−1of data collected in proton–proton collisions at √s=8TeV. This search is sensitive to long-lived particles that decay to Standard Model particles producing jets at the outer edge of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter or inside the hadronic calorimeter. No significant excess of events is observed. Limits are reported on the product of the scalar boson production cross section times branching ratio into long-lived neutral particles as a function of the proper lifetime of the particles. Limits are reported for boson masses from 100 GeVto 900 GeV, and a long-lived neutral particle mass from 10 GeVto 150 GeV
